On February 5, 2026, representatives from Nevada County Habitat for Humanity joined advocates from across California in Sacramento for Habitat for Humanity’s Annual Advocacy Day. That same morning, the California State Senate unanimously passed Senate Resolution 71, a landmark resolution affirming the vital role of affordable homeownership in the future of our state. The vote was 35 to 0, with senators from across the political spectrum rising one by one to declare their support — a rare and inspiring display of bipartisan unity around an issue that touches every community.
The resolution’s authors and co-authors spoke with remarkable passion about the work Habitat for Humanity does every day. Senators described witnessing families receive the keys to their first home, children finally having a room to call their own, and the ripple effect a stable home creates — better school outcomes, greater economic mobility, and stronger communities for generations to come. One senator called Habitat’s model “doing more for less,” while another said simply that Habitat “reminds us that compassion paired with action can change the trajectory of someone’s life.” Habitat representatives were welcomed onto the Senate floor and recognized alongside Habitat affiliates from across California as living proof that this work is not abstract — it is real, it is local, and it is happening right here in Nevada County.
California’s homeownership rate ranks 49th in the nation, and only 18% of households can afford the median-priced home statewide. But in communities where Habitat is at work, that number is changing — one family, one home, one sweat equity hour at a time. Thank you for being part of that change.
