How did you first become involved with Habitat for Humanity?

I moved from Southern California to Northern California about 20 years ago. I first became involved with Habitat through a friend and a church event called Thrivent Build. It was a great experience—I had fun, learned new skills, and enjoyed working alongside other volunteers. After that first build, I wanted to stay involved.

What are some of your most memorable Habitat experiences?

One moment that stands out was watching a homeowner receive the keys to her new home. Seeing her excitement and the joy on her children’s faces was incredibly moving. Events like groundbreakings, ribbon cuttings, and home dedications really show the impact Habitat has on families.

I also made many good friendships while building houses. The relationships formed through volunteering have been just as meaningful as the construction work itself.

How has your relationship with Habitat changed over the years? For many years, I participated on the construction crew and helped build homes. More recently, I transitioned to supporting Habitat through donations. I had to stop building because of a leg injury, but I am recovering and hope to return to the build site soon.

What impact do you think Habitat has on the community?

Habitat changes lives. Homeownership gives families stability and opportunities they might not otherwise have. Affordable housing is a critical need in our community, and Habitat helps fill that need.

I would like to see more affordable housing options in Nevada County, including both single-family homes and higher-density developments so that different housing needs can be met.

Why did you decide to make a planned gift?

I believe in giving during my lifetime, but I also wanted to continue supporting causes that matter to me in the future. I committed to a planned gift because I want Habitat’s work to continue helping families for years to come.

People sometimes think planned giving is only for wealthy individuals, but that’s not true. Anyone can make a meaningful contribution through thoughtful planning.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I am grateful to be part of Habitat and for everything it has brought into my life. It has been rewarding to see the difference Habitat makes in the community and in the lives of homeowners.

I look forward to returning to building once my injury has healed. In the meantime, I will continue supporting Habitat however I can and encourage others to get involved through volunteering, donating, or planned giving.
